JAMagoo *missing the old UI* says:

I had this same question and it was discussed at length in another thread which I can't find at the moment...

The gist of it was that while the 2048 x 768 should work well, there is no exact size that works best. The size/resolution/orientation of the photo you choose for the banner will readjust itself depending on the size of the browser window. The height of the banner always remains fixed, even as the width of the window increases or decreases. It means that as the dimensions of the banner change, the image adjusts, keeping it's own dimensions no matter what the size of the banner happens to be at any given moment. Therefore, the wider the window gets, the smaller the visible portion of your chosen image will be, regardless of the size of the image you've chosen.

(I'm not sure I explained that very clearly. It was explained really well in the other thread if anyone wants to go fishing for it.)

Nicolas Mertens says:

Someone in another thread mentioned that the ratio for the cover photo is about 6:1, around 2048 x 342. I worked with that information, and found that 342 is still a bit too high. Nevertheless, it's a good start.

This is the image used as default cover photo: s.yimg.com/pw/images/coverphoto11_h.jpg.v2

It is 2048 x 768.

I hope this helps someone.

It's prompting you to select an image from your photostream. Select an image and it will appear as the cover photo.

Gary Allman says:

I've created a template for the cover image in .jpg, .png, and .psd formats. I've also created a film strip template.

The cover image size 2048 x 492px.

You can download the files and read more about it on my blog: barefootbusinessman.net/2013/05/the-new-flickr-cover-imag...

I hope that helps.

What happens after you click "Edit cover photo"?

Muduman says:

My choice of cover photo would only upload into my photostream with no choice to use it as a cover. This is because my entire stream is marked as restricted therefore has no "public" photos. I have another less explicit Flickr account and had no trouble changing the cover on this.

Gary Allman says:

There's definitely a logical error in how the cover image update works.

Having opted to upload a new image it should then return to the recent images screen so you can select the image you've uploaded.

As of now you have to Select 'Edit Cover Photo' once to upload the picture, and then a second time to select the photo to be the cover image.

The fact that 'non-public' images don't show in the recent uploads threw me for a while (I always upload my pictures private and make public those I want to share - I've changed that for cover images).

V'ron says:

You would think that you could browse your photostream or sets to find a picture you want to use as a cover photo, as opposed to re-uploading an old one because it would take you several hours to scroll through "recent photos". They need to fix this. Same for your buddy icon.

Is everyone else finding that the quality of the cover image is terrible, even though the source image displays fine on Flickr? It's not sharp, looks lacking in contrast compared to the original...

thank you Gary, I think your explanation is very useful, I like the filmstrip idea and appreciate your sharing of the template. I may take a play at it myself.

 NosamLuap (aka Paul Mason):

yup! i played with all kinds of sizes, processing it increased sharpness etc etc, but even with the 2048x768 image, it comes out blurry, whereas the image i just uploaded immediately below is sharp and clean.

i'm just going to use a noisy + blurry image, that way it won't show. =)

I used a 3k image for my page-header and it's super sharp. No blur whatsoever.

Loads lightning fast too.

larigan. says:

@Ruth's bird...I found the problem is with my browser Firefox! Completely unable to change the cover photo using that. It just takes me back to my photo stream. Firefox also doesn't support browsing contacts using side arrows. I know all this because I have an iPad as well and things I can do on an iPad with great ease cannot be replicated using Firefox at all. All this should have been discovered by the beta testers before the programme was released.

It's not quite that simple.

Cottage Days says:

Fortunately, I had uploaded a pano shot only a couple of weeks ago, so I was able to use it for a replacement cover photo. The width of the original file is 2424 pixels, and the original doesn't quite stretch across my 27" monitor. So the image has been enlarged further by Flickr programming. It looks a little bit fuzzy on my monitor, but perhaps it looks better on smaller monitors. It works good enough, and most importantly, its MY photo, not somebody else's.

I guess it is asking too much of Flickr to post pixel size information in the upload directions, and also provide the ability to move the image around so that one doesn't have to force-fit an existing image in one's photostream or resort to creating a special image just for the cover photo. (Thanks, Flickr, for wasting the time of a lot of people.) It would also probably be asking too much for Flickr to have an option for inserting various colors in the cover photo space instead of using a photo.

First - Your response is not the answer to the topic of this post. It means this is not good manner
Second - if You removed all Your photos, then You have no reason to complain now.

That's interesting and also confusing! Then I have no explanation at all why things that can be done on the iPad can't be done in FF, unless it is because I am using Vista....
