I'm with the crowd who don't like these pics. I ADORE babies, but for me, cute is capturing something natural and spontaneous. Children are beautiful and perfect just as they are. Using them as a blank canvas or clay with which to create your own art does not appeal to me in the slightest. I'm not saying the babies were harmed, and I understand the argument about how malleable they are at this age, and how soundly they sleep- but to me this is not beautiful. How can you improve upon perfection? The artist has only succeeded in taking away the personality of these babies and turning them into something cheesy and contrived. How people find this more "heart-melting" than a baby sleeping naturally in its own way is completely beyond me.

Such lovely pictures I am astounded that there are negative comments, one saying they prefer animals, one complaining because they have seen it twice...... WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU SHAMEFULL NEGATIVE MORONS??????? Can I not read an article these days without someone blasting it or it's contents - If you don't like it don't read it and go back to your miserable moaning life without spoiling it for others.

For the ignorant people that just want to be negative and find something in life to complain about, go find a political blog to gripe on! The gift of a baby is a miracle that some people spend their lives dreaming of. Capturing the essence of that innocence is an art! For the person that thinks these are "unnatural" and "uncomfortable" positions....have you ever seen the position a baby is in inside the womb? And don't you think if someone was "hurting" these babies that their parents wouldn't intervene? Does anyone think about what they say before they post it? Makes you wonder how many of these people are parents or appreciate human beings in their first stage of life. Keep posting these beautiful pictures for those of us that love babies!

With their snowy skin, plump cheeks, teeny fingers and toes, and pouty rosebud lips, these newborn babies really do deserve their Sleeping Beauties nickname.

It was coined by sisters Tracy Raver and Kelley Ryden, who took most of the photographs at their studio in Nebraska - which can be seen in a new book - when the babies were fewer than 10 days old.

Some are swaddled in knitted scarves, others are snuggled up in hammocks, snoozing on a fluffy rug or curled up in a wicker basket - but they all have in common their unique, gently-contorted poses.

To curl the babies into these positions, Tracy, Kelley and a third Canadian photographer, Stephanie Robin, have a simple trick: they photograph the babies when they are between five and 10 days old.

At that age, they sleep soundly and they are malleable to be moved into 'curly' poses, as Kelley calls them.

It also helps that Stephanie is a physiotherapist, which helps her understand their joints and reflexes.

The photo shoots usually last between three and four hours at a studio (with nice natural light, a good temperature gauge and lots of props). The babies either wear white clothes or nothing at all.

It takes around a fortnight for the photographs to be processed before they're presented to the besotted parents.

What's their first reaction when they first see the snaps of their snuggled-up baby, all fuzzy-haired with scrunched-up eyes?

Surprise, surprise, many of them burst into tears.

As Stephanie says: 'How could they not love these adorable little subjects?'
